Proxy Rules

Use the Proxy Rules dialog box to edit the proxy settings.

You will find a description of what Proxy Rules are used for and how to configure them in the Proxy Rule Configuration section of the Administration Guide.

SMTP Relay (global settings)

These settings control how many emails can be forwarded onto another SMTP server.
Any emails relayed will be logged.
Only enable this option if you are prepared to accept the consequences of forwarding a limited number of email messages.

Emails will only be relayed if the SMTP Proxy Rule is configured and allows a connection.

  • Max Relays
The maximum number of emails the server will relay, (forward to another SMTP server).
    • If set at zero (the default) then no emails will be relayed. emails will be accepted and logged, but they will effectively be discarded.
    • A value of one or greater enables the KFSensor to act as a functional SMTP open relay server.

The reason for allowing this is that spammers typically send a test message to themselves to confirm any SMTP server they find is fully functioning before using it to send real spam to their victims.

This maximum value has two effects:

      1. If the total number of emails sent by all visitors exceeds this value then all further emails will be blocked for the specified time.
      2. If the total number of emails sent by one visitors exceeds this value then all further emails will be blocked for at least two days.

    • Lock Out For
If the total number of emails sent exceeds the Max Relays setting then no further emails will be sent for the number of minutes specified.
  • SMTP Server
If this value is blank then the server will attempt to relay an email directly to the SMTP server of the domain given in the email.
e.g. If the send address is <china9988@21cn.com> then the server will contact the server at 21cn.com directly.
KFSensor will keep re-trying to send an email if it cannot connect to the target SMTP server.

To ensure a better chance of the relay email being delivered it is possible to route all emails via a real SMTP server. To do this enter the domain name or IP address of the SMTP server in this field.

  • SMTP Server Port
The port number of the SMTP server specified in the field above.

SMTP Proxy Rule

The SMTP Proxy Rule determines if a given email should be relayed. An external application is used to provide greater configurability.
  • Rule Active
If unchecked the proxy rule will always fail and the associated proxy rule application will not be executed.
  • Application Path
The full path of the executable application that will be run
  • Arguments
The command line parameters that should be passed to the application
  • Working directory
The working directory that the application should run in.
If this is blank then the working directory will be set to the directory containing the application

SOCKS/HTTP Connect Proxy Rule

The SOCKS/HTTP Connect Proxy Rule determines if a given proxy connection should be relayed. An external application is used to provide greater configurability.
  • Rule Active
If unchecked the proxy rule will always fail and the associated proxy rule application will not be executed
  • Application Path
The full path of the executable application that will be run
  • Arguments
The command line parameters that should be passed to the application
  • Working directory
The working directory that the application should run in.
If this is blank then the working directory will be set to the directory containing the application
